Juror's Profiles
Hal Gould
For over 40 years, Hal Gould has been a tireless advocate of photographic art, and is himself a master photographer. He was a principal originator of the Camera Obscura Gallery in 1979 at the corner of 13th and Bannock Streets in Denver. It now represents perhaps the finest collection of fine art photography between the East and West coasts of the United States. Its exhibition walls present a lifetime of experience with both commercial and fine art photography, and collecting reflecting a personal vision of broad diversity in style and technique. He has received numerous awards, among which are the prestigious National Award—the Professional Photographers of America’s top award, and the Gold Medal Grand Prize in the International Federation of Photographer’s Competition in Riga, Latvia.
Loretta Young-Gautier
Loretta Young-Gautier’s work is informed by an early fascination with the Surrealist style of Rene Magritte, Remedios Varo and Giorgio de Chirico. Employing multiple exposures, negative sandwiching, combination printing and some recent digital manipulative techniques, Young-Gautier creates images in camera, computer and the darkroom. She has continued in this vein, exhibiting her work in numerous group and solo shows, over the last twenty years. Her work is meticulously hand-printed, sometimes taking weeks to create a single image. She produces a limited edition of no more than 25 archival silver gelatin prints. A Colorado native, Loretta is currently Associate Director of The Camera Obscura Gallery in Denver. She currently lives in Indian Hills.
Margy Dudley
Photography has been a part of her life since her first experience in the darkroom while she was in sixth grade. “I have always been partial to black and white because the photographer must support the content of an exciting composition without the use of color.” Margy started Open Shutter Gallery in Durango five years ago. She showcases local and national photographers, but admits that the gallery provides the opportunity to pursue her own passion for working on photography.
Lou Swenson
Lou Swenson has been obsessed by the art of photography for over fifty years. While working on an amateur level he won several contests. The awards encouraged him to pursue commercial photography as a profession. Now retired, his energies are devoted to fine art black and white film and hand printing negatives in a traditional wet darkroom.
